Video games are a complex nexus of systems and possibilities. These systems include hegemonies in representation and labor structures.
A growing number of mainstream games have gay characters, but they don’t always make it clear. Overwatch, Borderlands and other games allow you romance characters of the same gender but homosexuality isn’t part of their story.

Persona 4 received a lot of praise when it was released for presenting a character that was not afraid to be gay. This is exactly what it did. But it also suffered from a number of tasteless tropes in anime when it came down to its queer characters.
Take, for instance, the scene where Kanji and Yosuke are camping. Yosuke asks Kanji if he has any problems with girls. This is a dehumanizing and hateful question, which implies that being gay should be shunned.
After the scene, there are a number of jokes based on Kanji’s sexuality. This implies that being gay involves preferring women to men. Despite Atlus’ clumsy attempts to make a joke out of the situation, it still sends a harmful message that LGBTQ people are predatory and should force straight people into their culture. This is unfortunate, as the game’s plots explore how toxic masculinity affects the male leads and how they can replace it with love.

Video games have come a long way in portraying LGBTQ characters, reflecting societal attitudes towards diversity and inclusivity. From Kung Jin to Makoto in the BlazBlue Series, video games feature diverse narratives which resonate with a broad audience.
These games transport the player into virtual landscapes that are immersive and captivating. These stories are inspired by real-life experiences, and they explore themes like love, identity and acceptance. These games are particularly meaningful to LGBTQ+ players, as they can relate to their stories and experiences.
However, some gamers have complained about the representation of queerness in the game, describing it as “disappointing” and upholding homonormativity. Some gamers have also criticised the gameplay, and the sexuality of certain characters. Dream Daddy continues to be a popular video game despite the complaints. The game does not tackle issues such as queer sex or intersectional queerness in a meaningful way.

Blizzard Entertainment’s team-based first-person shooter Overwatch has numerous characters with rich backstories that are revealed through the game’s transmedia content. These narratives were met with praise for Blizzard Entertainment’s progressive stance towards representation, as well as criticism of their execution.
Recently, two of Overwatch’s biggest heroes –Solider:76 and Tracer — were revealed to be gay. Both were outed through non-game content, such as a holiday comic that revealed Tracer’s girlfriend, Emily.
Authenticity was a key theme in the discussions of these revelations. This is a concept that entails both the fidelity of the character’s characterization as well as the coherence of Overwatch’s fictional world. Furthermore, the discussion highlights a sense of belonging amongst LGBTQ players. These players are building an alternative, safe space in Overwatch where they can belong. This is similar to how fans and gamers have long created their own spaces of engagement by utilizing fan fiction.

There are a lot of great games out there that manage to fly the LGBTQ flag high without going into tropes or over focusing on diversity for the sake of it. Borderlands is another game that doesn’t hide its queerness under a layer cynicism.
Borderlands has a wide range of queer characters. From a gay friendly demon to a fembot. Even when it comes to a playable character like claptrap, it’s clear that Gearbox wanted to show that being gay is completely normal and not something that needs to be pointed out all the time.
Todd Harper’s essay about the Mass Effect series shows how gay romances are a common narrative in game worlds. While Harper’s essay focuses on Shepard as a “closet narrative”, it also highlights how the game has created space for romance and happy endings for LGBT characters, which is important when viewed in the context of an historically vilified genre.

Video games have evolved to incorporate innovative gameplay mechanics intertwined with diverse LGBTQ+ themes. Indie developers are leading the charge, providing gamers with a variety of experiences that resonate with their lived experiences. These games, from fantasy worlds to immersive stories, offer a feeling of empowerment and connection.
Axton, the splicer in the popular ‘Borderlands’ franchise was originally not meant to be bisexual, but due to coding errors when reviving other characters, he would say flirtatious lines whether it was a female or male character being revived. Gearbox accepted Axton’s accidental bisexuality, and has since canonised it in several DLCs.
Other games have a more explicit portrayal of a gay character, such as Riot’s ‘Caitlyn’ and ‘Vi’ who are in an intimate relationship, or ‘If Found …’,’, which is an independently developed game about a woman’s trans experience. It highlights both the euphoria as well the difficulties she faces during her transition.
